SMEEJ Foundation was born out of one young man's lived struggle — and his conviction that no one else should have to face it alone.
Who are we?
5
years of impact & commitment
More than 10K youths impacted
On the 22nd of November, 2004, SMEEJ Foundation‘s founder was a young man from a humble background, navigating life with little support and few open doors. It wasn’t a single dramatic event that shaped the vision, but a quiet, persistent realisation: ambition and ability alone are not enough.
What was missing was access to the right skills, the right mentors, and someone willing to invest in a young person simply because they were worth investing in. That gap, felt so personally, became the seed of an idea: that no young person should have to fight this hard, alone, just to be given a fair shot. That idea would go on to become SMEEJ Foundation.
The vision was not rushed into being, it was built, deliberately, over years of preparation. While on campus between January 2006 and October 2010, and later during his National Youth Service year from February 2010 to February 2011, the founder sought out every opportunity to understand how meaningful change is actually built. He volunteered and took part in programmes run by respected organisations such as LEAP Africa and Fate Foundation, studying closely how structured mentorship and entrepreneurship support could transform a young person's path in life.
In 2012, he relocated to the United Kingdom. Rather than set the vision aside, he leaned further into it, volunteering with organisations including Save the Children, and gaining firsthand exposure to international best practices in child welfare, community development, and advocacy. Every experience was preparation for what was to come.
On the 29th of August, 2021, in Warri, that years-long preparation became reality: SMEEJ Foundation was formally
launched. What began as one young man’s determination to spare others his struggle has since grown into a foundation with a broad and evolving mandate spanning entrepreneurship, skill acquisition, digital technology, advocacy, and community development.
Yet the mission at its core has never changed: to close the gap between ability and opportunity, so that no young person’s potential goes to waste simply because the right door never opened.
That is the story behind SMEEJ Foundation and the reason its work continues today.
The problem the Foundation exists to solve
Many young people and families in disadvantaged communities lack access to quality skills training, entrepreneurial
opportunity, digital literacy, and a voice in decisions that affect them. This leads to cycles of unemployment, exclusion, and poverty. SMEEJ Foundation exists to close that gap equipping young people with practical skills and platforms so they can build sustainable livelihoods and participate fully in society.
